This week’s Euroscopic podcast will be out soon. For those who already want a taste of it (or actually like to read), here’s what’s on the menu:
Amuse-bouche
Poland is all over the news this week. Let’s have some pierogi and dig in.
Starter
The populist Polish government is not a huge fan of migrants, but something they like even less is getting depicted as not a huge fan of migrants — especially when it’s a well-received film at the Venice Film Festival. You know we’re in for a worthwhile debate when someone gets called a Nazi.
Primo
All’s fair in love and war, as they say. In politics, though, not so much. Poland is one of a few European countries holding up Ukrainian grain exports. Ukraine is suing, so Poland did the neighborly thing by halting weapons deliveries. It seems “we hate Russia” only gets you so far, especially when there’s an election to win.
Secondo
But back to migrants. Obviously their visa issues are their fault. If they just bribed Polish authorities, they would be welcome. Folks in Brussels would like to know more about that. At the same time, those folks in Brussels have their own questions to answer about why the EU can’t figure out migration. The “refugee crisis” thing is kinda getting old.
Nachtisch
That war that everyone thought would be the big one before Russia decided to up the ante in Ukraine started again. Then abruptly stopped. What is the EU’s role in the simmering conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia?
Don’t forget to tip
In economy news, whether renting or buying, housing seems to suck everywhere. There is some good news, though, most cities are below-bubble levels.
Doggy bag
Europe’s favorite, right-wing populists are getting the band back together. What it means for European politics as we trudge ahead to elections in the spring — and other related issues to look out for.
Still hungry?
