Germany’s representatives argue that Germany’s military support for Israel has little, if anything, to do with Israel’s offensive operations in Gaza, which have killed more than 33,000 people in six months — or more than 1.5% of the Palestinian population there. Germany’s weapons exports licenses go through a rigorous review process for compliance with national and international law, a lead lawyer argues, and more so for “war weapons.” These are distinguished from “other military equipment.”
A recent Forensis report shows that, in 2023, Germany approved €306,371,958 in “other military equipment” and €20,133,198 in “war weapons.” Through February 15, 2024, an additional €32,449 in “war weapons” and €8,971,227 in “other military equipment” were approved for Israel.
A note of irony is worthwhile here. In defending itself against accusations of violating international law, Germany is undermining its fidelity to Israel on the basis of “reason of state.” If Israel’s security and existence are tantamount to Germany’s own, then by its own admission, Germany is not doing much to see to that end.
